August Newsletter

Another great meeting at the Phinny community center this month. While it was light on attendance, we have a piper from Portland come up to play some tunes with us. Looking forward to seeing them again!

We’ve had interest from several pipers regarding coming to town for workshops and concerts. Among them are Tom Delany, Joey Abarta, and Mikie Smyth. There is still much to be discussed, but it’s a promising start!

Up coming Concerts

On the note of concerts, I’ve received word that Cillian Vallely will be coming to Seattle in November with friends David Doocey (fiddle), and Alan Murray (guitar) for a small, IPC only concert. Please stay tuned for more information and location on that!

Upcoming Workshops

Celtic Arts Foundation will be holding their annual Smallpipe &Uilleann pipe Workshop in Mt. Vernon next month. This workshop is led by Fred Morrison himself, and offers one day (Thursday, sept 28th ) of Uilleann pipe instruction. I’ve attended three of his workshops and highly recommend them. Fred Morrison is a wealth of information and insight into the world of piping, and pipes themselves. You can find more information about the workshop here.

Bits & Bobs

Wally shared this article on oboe reed making that many pipers might enjoy - The Agony and Ecstasy of an Oboe Reed Maker

Here’s a nice documentary on Leo Rowesome that showed up in my youtube feed -

And here is a Padraig McGovern concert from a couple months ago that you may enjoy -

And finally, here's an old documentary about Irish music as a whole aired by the BBC in 1991. It’s got interviews with some pretty big names -

That’s it for this month. Hope to see you all at the September meeting on Sept. 10th!
