Congratulations, and my deepest sympathies.

Workshops & Concerts

Joey Abarta Workshop & Concert Recap

We were fortunate to have Joey Abarta join us this past weekend for an excellent piping workshop and house concert. Huge thanks to Joey for coming all the way from Boston, and to everyone who showed up. We had an excellent turn out at both events. See for yourself!

In my humble opinion Joey’s concepts on piping are profound, approachable, and practical to pipers of all levels. And his style of piping demonstrates all that and more. If you ever get the chance to see Joey live, please do. But until then, I’d suggest buying his albums!

WEST COAST TIONOL: LA

Remember the West Coast Tionol will be in LA this year. President’s Day weekend, Feb. 16-18. For more information you can see last months newsletter here: December Newsletter, or email Larry Dunn.

Bit’s & Bobs

I came across some great recordings on Johnny Doran recently. Perhaps you’ve come across them yourself, but if not here is a chance to familiarize yourself with one of uilleann piping’s greatest legends. And if you have, then you probably want to listen to him again anyways. The first video is actually a documentary, I believe from an old radio program. The second is the “Complete Recordings” of Johnny Doran. Enjoy!

As I was at the session last night, the legendary Kieran O’Mahony shared this excellent article with me about the making of Crowely pipes. The article comes from the Cork Pipers Club. It’s a great and fairly short read, so have a look!

Crowley Pipemakers by John Mitchell of the Cork Pipers Club.

That’s it for now. See you all at the next meeting!
