October Meeting Recap

Another tune filled meeting this month. Great to see some faces that haven’t been around for a while.

Due to a beer festival at the Phinney Center, our next meeting will be the FIRST SUNDAY of November, rather than the usual second. That means our next meeting will be November, 5th 2-5pm at the Phinney Community Center.

I’ve been hearing reports of the club emails gong to spam folders. So, please connect with you fellow pipers. If you know anyone who isn’t receiving meeting invites, or you know someone who wants to be added to the mailing list, please give us a shout at hello@irishpipersclub.com.

Bits & Bobs

I recently stumbled across a great Loe Rowesome recording recently. It's taken from an old 78 and the quality is quite good. Have a listen!

I have to say, after recently getting into vinyl and finding some great piping albums are local records shops, I’m truly surprised at the quality of some of these older records compared to what has been digitized for Spotify. Even though you may be able to find some of these albums online, hearing the originals in person is really something worth seeking out. All that is to say, hit up those local records shops and make them bring in more Irish trad vinyl!

NPU: The World of Uilleann Piping: The Italian Experience

I recently attended a concert featuring the band Gadan, an irish/old time group from Italy. I thought it was especially interesting because I was planning to share this video the NPU released on uilleann pipers in Italy. I have a brief moment to chat with the members of Gadan while waiting for my car after the show. Mentioning this video, and hearing I was a piper, their eyes lit up saying the actually knew the pipers in this video. It’s always amazing me the reach Irish and Scottish folk music has  in the world. From Irish sessions in Japan, to Italian musicians coming to America to play Irish folk music. It's an impressive culture to be a part of!

Bandcamp Finds

You might alreaidy know that NPU has a Bandcamp page, but they also have some artist specific pages that I’ve stumbled across from time to time. Including this Robbie Hanna album. I’m sure many of you are familiar with Hannan’s piping, but for those who aren’t, or if you just haven’t listened in a while, be sure to check out The Temptest.

And here’s another great album from Emmett Gill, also hosted by NPU.

That’s it for October. Look forward to see you all at the next meeting!
